He asked her today. He put all his cards on the table. He told her how he felt and what he wanted. She told him they should just be friends. He didn’t know if he should be angry or sad or both. She didn’t understand he wasn’t a boy anymore. He wasn’t playing games anymore. He wanted her and only and her. He tried to explain it to her and she wouldn’t hear it.
He was worried that she was going to marry someone else. She would be someone else’s wife. She would have someone else’s children. She would bake cookies in someone else’s house. She would wrap presents for someone else’s family. She would laugh at his jokes, say good morning and good night to him.
What could he do? He’d poured his heart out to her. He’d told her about all of his past. He’d explained where he’d been. He’d been finding himself for the last 8 years. He wasn’t out playing around, not really. He was a Marine. He’d joined when he’d left her all those years ago. He told her then they should just be friends and it was his way of protecting her. Today though, he wanted her to know the truth. He’d needed to prove to himself he could be more than this small town and his dad. He needed to be better.
Now his heart was breaking. She really had always been there for him and he’d always been there for her until he’d walked out on her that day. He couldn’t make excuses for it. He wouldn’t. Every person has to find who they’re meant to be. They have to find what kind of person they really are and he didn’t feel like he’d ever be able to do it if he’d have stayed here with her all those years ago. He had to leave to be a better man.
He understood. He wasn’t the one left behind. He had to think about her feelings. Love in its purest form requires honesty and today he had to be honest with himself. He left her here. They were like two flowers. He grew and strengthened. She withered and weakened.
Their friends had all gone off and coupled up or moved on with other people, but she stayed single and that gave him hope. He just had to show her that he was here to stay this time and he was here for her. He came back for her. He wasn’t leaving without her. She was waiting for something, someone. He hoped with every fiber of his being that it was him. She was his one and God forgive him but he desperately prayed that he was still hers.
